Yamakaathaghi

In a rural village near Thanjavur, Leela (played by Roopa Koduvayur) is the daughter of the village head. A young unmarried woman, she suffers from mild asthma, which occasionally causes her breathing difficulties.

One day, her father returns home after being away and, in a fit of anger, scolds everyone. When Leela questions his behavior, he slaps her across the face in rage. The next morning, to the family's shock, Leela is found hanging in her room.

Fearing that her suicide would bring disgrace to the family’s reputation, they decide to attribute her death to an asthma attack and proceed with funeral arrangements. However, when they attempt to lift Leela’s body, it becomes impossibly heavy. Even as multiple people try together, they fail to move her body out of the house.

A priest arrives but, after witnessing the bizarre happenings, flees in terror. Various others try to remove the body but meet the same fate. This raises a chilling question—has Leela’s body been possessed by a supernatural force?

While some movies have unrelated titles, and others have confusing names, *Yamakaathaghi * is a title that perfectly resonates with the film’s plot. Even if the makers had chosen a different name, viewers would still refer to it as *Yamakaathaghi *.

Roopa Koduvayur plays the heroine, but she has hardly any scenes before her character dies by hanging. For the rest of the film, she is seen only as a corpse.

Now, one may wonder how an actress can perform as a dead body. Think of it this way—if a corpse is possessed by a spirit, it can act. That is precisely what Roopa has done. Even as a lifeless body, her expressions convey emotions like anger and eerie smiles.

Veteran actor Nagesh once proved that even a lifeless body can be made to speak in a film. Similarly, this movie demonstrates that a heroine can captivate the audience even while portraying a corpse.

The suspense of why Leela’s body refuses to leave the house unfolds gradually throughout the movie. Since every scene is intricately tied to this mystery, revealing even one moment would serve as a spoiler.

Geetha Kailasam, playing Leela’s mother, delivers a heartfelt performance, embodying a true mother figure.

The movie also features Raju Rajappan, Subash Ramasamy, and Haritha in key roles.

Produced by Srinivasa Rao Jalkam with music composed by Jion George, the film’s cinematography by Sujith Sarang stands out, with each frame adding to the atmosphere of horror.

Director Pepin George Jayaseelan has meticulously crafted *Yemakadhagi*, determined to leave the audience terrified.
