In that fishing village, it is customary for the men in the household to stay home for three months and then go to sea for fishing for the other nine months. Led by Raju (played by Naga Chaitanya), who heads the fishermen, they venture to sea. However, his girlfriend Sathya (played by Sai Pallavi fears the dangers at and urges him, "Don't go fishing, marry me instead and live peacefully." As the leader of the fishermen, Raju decides to defy her plea and go out to sea, where he is caught in a storm and ends up at the Pakistan border, captured by the military there. Meanwhile, Sathya is arranged to marry someone else. The film ‘Dandal’ provides an emotional answer to whether Raju returns and if Sathya accepts him back.
Thandel, as explained by the director, is the title given to the leader of fishermen. Although the story is based on true events from Gujarat, it intricately weaves elements of patriotism, family bonds, and an overarching beautiful love story, delivering a strong film.
Thandel stands as a significant film in Naga Chaitanya's career, offering him a valuable opportunity, which he capitalizes on by crafting a new image for himself. He delivers a performance that highlights hard work and dedication. "You shouldn't go fishing. Do you want me or the title Thandel?" Sai Pallavi asks angrily, leading to a moment where Naga Chaitanya has to calm her while simultaneously making a critical train departure to join his fellow fishermen. The intensity continues with scenes showing Chaitanya in a Pakistani prison, clashing with inmates driven by patriotism.
When Naga Chaitanya performs so well, Sai Pallavi too shines in her role, delivering outstanding acting every time. She portrays a love battle, maintaining her emotional distance from Chaitanya out of frustration that he doesn't value her words. Such opportunities for Sai Pallavi to exhibit her acting talent have been plentifully provided by the director, and she doesn't miss her chance.
While the film has many characters, the memorable ones are Naga Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi, with supportive performances from actors like Naren and Karunakaran.
Cinematographer Shyam Dutt crafts a visual painting within the film.
Devi Sri Prasad's music elevates the film to another level.
Allu Aravind presents and Bunny Vasu produces the film.
