Raghu Thatha

"Raghu Thatha is directed by Suman Kumar and produced by Hombale Films and Vijay Kiragandur, with music by Sean Roldan. The movie stars Keerthy Suresh, M.S. Bhaskar, Devadarshini, Ravindra Vijay, Anandsami, and others.

The story is set during the anti-Hindi agitation period. Keerthy Suresh plays the protagonist, an author who writes under a pseudonym and is a staunch opponent of Hindi. She is determined not to let the Hindi language infiltrate her hometown of Valluvarpettai. To prevent this, she organizes several protests and rallies the people. However, circumstances eventually force her into a situation where she has to pass a Hindi examination."

"In Raghu Thatha, Keerthy Suresh plays the role of a fearless woman who serves as an inspiration to many by leading the fight against the imposition of the Hindi language. The movie humorously explores whether she learns Hindi to pass the exam and solve her problems or if she stands firm in her opposition to Hindi and still manages to overcome her challenges. The title Raghu Thatha is inspired by a phrase from the 1981 film Indru Poi Naalai Vaa by K. Bhagyaraj, where the scene involving teaching Hindi is famously comedic. However, despite using this iconic phrase as the title, the film disappointingly lacks even a trace of the humor from that original scene."

"Keerthy Suresh, who plays the protagonist Kayalvizhi, delivers her role effectively as a revolutionary woman who opposes the imposition of Hindi and advocates for feminism. She has performed her role diligently. However, she struggles to score well in the comedy scenes. M.S. Bhaskar, who plays Keerthy Suresh's grandfather, tries his best to make the audience laugh, much like a speaker at a rally with no audience who strains his voice. While his efforts do elicit some laughs in a few scenes, in many others, the audience is left unsure of how to react."

"Except for Devadarshini and Anand Sami, the rest of the actors and actresses in supporting roles are relatively unknown to the audience, and their performances fail to blend well with the storyline. As a result, the film doesn't connect with the viewers and runs aimlessly. Cinematographer Yamini Yagnamurthy has made some effort to cater to the period setting, but there are still several logical inconsistencies."

"Director Suman Kumar, who also wrote the film, chose to center the story around the imposition of Hindi and the ensuing protests. However, instead of addressing or depicting any controversial aspects, he focused entirely on humor. Even though there was an opportunity to delve into the serious themes within the story, he concentrated on completing the film within the given budget and making it funny, which has resulted in a disappointing outcome.

Throughout the film, viewers are left confused about what is happening and what message is being conveyed. Only about 20 minutes before the end of the movie do they experience some relief and a bit of laughter."
