JINN - The Pet

Direction: T.R. Bala Cast: Mugen rao

, Pavya Trika, Radha Ravi, Vinothini, Bala Saravanan

T.R. Bala's "JINN - The Bet" arrives as an attempt to blend all the traditional elements of Tamil cinema - romance, comedy, and a touch of horror - into a single narrative. However, this mixture reaches us only as confusion. Right from the moment the film begins, it moves unclearly, leaving us wondering whether this is a fantasy horror, a family story, or a struggle showcasing self-confidence.

Plot Summary: Shakti (Mugen Rao), who worked in a music band in Malaysia for five years, returns to India with a genie, believing he needs to change his life. Coming to Chennai with the goal of forming a music band and working at restaurants and celebrations, Shakti believes that the genie's help is the way to change his fortune. But things don't unfold as expected. The genie's actions and Shakti's efforts form the core of the story.

Diversions and Narrative Confusion: The film "JINN - The Pet" doesn't provide us with a clear direction from the beginning. Shadows of films like Kanchana and The Conjuring are continuously visible throughout. Traditional 'love at first sight' scenes, followed by romantic songs, then marriage - a tediously repetitive pattern.

Meanwhile, the creation that provides us with countless details about the genie fails to give a proper conclusion to all that information. Contradictory turns like the genie claiming it cannot help at one moment, then the same genie tormenting the villain later, seem to be changed merely for the screenplay's convenience.

Technical Aspects: The VFX work used in creating the genie is excellent. But apart from that, all other aspects merely float on the surface. The creation fails to properly showcase Shakti's economic situation and is incomplete in showing the impact of that problem on his actions. The timeline changes regarding Geetha's (played by Vinothini) pregnancy are also constructed in an incomprehensible manner.

The Villain is Not the Story's Pillar: The film's antagonist is written in a completely incoherent manner. The villain who disappears at one point returns only in the final 30 minutes. Only the background music helps in making us feel this character's evil.

Some Order in the Final Act: The film shows some attempt at organization in its final portion. But by then, through many thoughtless turns, conveniently written screenplay, and numerous missed opportunities, the audience's engagement has already been shattered.

Verdict: "JINN - The Pet" is indeed a different attempt. But it proceeds in a way that makes it impossible to determine what genre of film it is, continuing with an uncertain storyline. While there are elements that attract us to a very minimal extent, it mostly goes astray. The unclear path, confused writing, and half-abandoned scenes diminish this film's impact.
