Due to the Sri Lankan civil war, Tamil refugees migrate to Tamil Nadu as displaced persons. They are accommodated in the Rameswaram refugee camp. Selvi (Lijo Mol), who had arrived in India earlier, is waiting for her husband Maran's (Sasikumar) arrival. He eventually joins her.
In this situation, a former Prime Minister is killed in a bomb blast. Subsequently, on suspicion, more than 40 people including Maran are taken from the refugee camp as investigation prisoners and imprisoned in Vellore Fort jail. While they expected to return home in a few days, the situation develops where they remain there for years. Following this, Maran and other prisoners attempt to escape by digging a tunnel from the fort. What happens next is answered thrillingly in the climax.
The film is made based on the true story of Tamil investigation prisoners who escaped by digging a tunnel from Vellore Fort jail in 1995. The shocking scene where Sasikumar, arriving from Sri Lanka, is suddenly surrounded and arrested by police is gripping. From the scenes where Sasikumar and other investigation prisoners are imprisoned in Vellore Fort jail until the climax, prison scenes completely dominate the film.
Various questions about how they would dig the tunnel inside the prison and where they would dump the pile of soil extracted from the tunnel are reasonably answered by each scene. The scenes where Sasikumar directly confronts a senior police officer for his Tamil people are thrilling. There is no evidence about whether all such scenes actually happened in the real incident. Moreover, Sasikumar's character itself is a fictional character depicted in this story.
Lijo Mol, who plays Sasikumar's wife, has delivered a realistic performance. Both Sasikumar and Lijo speaking in the same dialect as Tamil people adds strength to the scenes, bringing the characters close to the heart. After Malavika arrives as a lawyer advocating for Tamil people, a turn occurs in the story.
In the opening scene of the film, a woman belonging to an organization becomes a suicide bomber and assassinates the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi by detonating a bomb, creating a blazing inferno that shakes the entire arena in a second.
Recently, Sasikumar's film "Tourist Family" was released, where he also played a Tamil character. He has also played a Tamil in "Freedom." However, the difference between that film and this one is enormous. "Tourist Family" was described as a commercial film mixed with comedy, while "Freedom" is structured with the brutal torture suffered by Tamil people in prison and the different scenes of them losing patience and escaping from jail.
Boys Manikandan has tried to make a place in hearts by acting in a different character. Pandiyan Paramasivam has produced the film. Jibran's music and songs are strong. Cinematographer N.S. Udayakumar has filmed the torture suffered by Tamil people and the beatings they received from police through his camera eyes as if they were events happening before our eyes.
