Bloody Beggar

After the success of films like Dada and Star, actor Kavin’s much-anticipated movie is Bloody Beggar.

In this film, Kavin plays a beggar who tells various lies to solicit alms. He is accompanied by a young boy who sells small items like books and pens. Kavin dreams of living in a grand mansion. One day, he gets invited to a special event at that mansion, where he hopes to make a significant change in his life. Upon entering, he discovers that a fierce competition is underway among heirs to divide the estate. However, once inside, Kavin finds himself in grave danger as they attempt to kill him. It soon becomes clear that those responsible for his wife’s death are also present at the mansion. The plot revolves around whether Kavin manages to escape from this perilous situation and if he seeks revenge against those who caused his wife’s demise.

The director has attempted to create a dark comedy by incorporating elements of fantasy into the story. Kavin, who typically appears in sophisticated attire, shows remarkable courage in taking on the role of a beggar at this stage of his career. He convincingly embodies this character. Redin Kingsley, playing a pivotal role, showcases an exaggerated performance in several scenes, managing to evoke laughter at times. The casting of the characters appearing on screen is commendable, as each actor fits their role well. Even when some scenes take on a theatrical tone, the actors have understood the nature of the story and performed accordingly. Particularly, the bond between Kavin and the young boy, who accompanies him as a fellow beggar, adds an intriguing layer to the narrative. Their dynamic offers a delightful touch of interest to the film.

The story features humor sprinkled throughout, with Kavin’s flashback invoking a sense of poignancy. If the depth of the character had been thoughtfully considered in relation to Kavin’s appearance, it could have transformed into a significant role for him. Once the narrative enters the mansion, the plot navigates through various rooms and corners. Despite this, the cinematography remains seamless, showcasing the work of cinematographer Sujith Sarang, who deserves commendation for his efforts. Similarly, the film’s composer, Jen Martin, garners attention for providing a fitting background score that complements the scenes. However, the screenplay’s predictability in certain moments is a weakness, as some scenes can be anticipated by the audience.

Debut director Sivabalan can be said to have achieved a degree of success in storytelling. He attempts to make the second half more engaging than the first. However, overall, there is a sense of mediocrity that lingers. It seems like there could have been more focus on the screenplay. Nonetheless, ‘Blood Picker’ can be described as a new attempt in that it invites the audience to think differently.

Fans of dark comedy are likely to enjoy this film.
