After the government implemented NEET, a uniform entrance exam for all-India admissions to medical education, the crisis in Tamil Nadu - and the resulting loss of life - has taken a toll.
The movie Anjaamai tells this issue as Fact.
A simple farming family of 'Sarkar' lives in Gandhi village near Dindigul, Tamil Nadu. Sarkar's son, Arundhavam wants to study medicine. It is mandatory to write the new entrance exam (NEET) for that. Examination Center in Tamil Nadu is available for exam center in Jaipur.
The student from a poor family leaves for Jaipur with his father Sarkar. Due to the last time the examination order came, there was no seat in the train. They are going to Jaipur after being crushed. There's a lot of crap out there. Arundhavam to write the exam.. Father Sarkar comes out of the school premises to buy a bottle of water. What happens after that is shocking.
Vidharth is truly living as a simple farmer… a loving family head… a loving father. When he learns that some of the students who fail the NEET exam commit suicide, he panics. Vidharth is brilliant in every scene, buying a table lamp instead of a ceiling fan and putting a wire fence around the well. That too in that final scene.. he makes us nervous.
Oh.. is this Vani Bojan? As a mother of two grown children, she is the head of the family. An example is the scene where she fights with her husband for their children's education.
Krithik Mohan's performance as their son is also special. The look of shock in the his eyes when lawyer lies to the court about his mother is amazing. Raghuman, who comes as a police officer, then gives up his job and takes on the avatar of a lawyer with a good heart, is amazing in his performance.
Karthik's cinematography naturally takes us to the field. Karthik's camera captures the attention of the village scenes as well as the Jaipur scenes.
Kala Charan's music is the strength of the film. Wherever there are no verses, emotions are expressed wonderfully.
Director S.P.Subburaman has carved every scene in the first half to show the hardships of our Tamil Nadu students due to NEET exam and how the coaching centers have made money from this NEET exam in a very professional and realistic manner.
The plot of the film is in the first half where Sarkar (Vidharth) falls at the feet of the officials conducting the NEET exam for his son. The sight is eye-watering. Heart pounding. This scene tells us like a slap in the face that "this is how our students and their parents will struggle during the NEET exam".
In the second half, every question asked by lawyer Rahman in the court, these people are legitimate questions of our government.
The indifference of the government, the minister, the officials… those are the verses that express the pain of the people.
The producer Thiruchithram who produced a socially responsible film deserves praise.
Kudos to Dream Warriors Pictures for releasing a good film.
Anjaamai is a must watch movie.
